Soap Dispenser Poll Tells All

I was watching a popular TV show the other day and they were talking about weather or not people wash their hands after they use the restroom. Of course, when they polled the audience every single person said that they always wash their hands post potty break. But as studies show, that simply isn’t true.
I can say that as a germ freak I always notice when women don’t wash their hands and I notice this A LOT. It's amazing to me how many women (I'm sure guys too but I don't frequent the men's room) will exit a dirty public restroom without washing their hands. I have heard the argument "Urine is sterile" and I do understand that, but can you imagine the awful and disgusting germs on the surfaces of the bathroom?

I looked online for information and I found numerous sites that will tell all about the gross things that can be found on surfaces and then transferred from person to person. The New York Times recently did a study showing hand washing habits:

“In the nationwide poll, conducted from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22 by Harris Interactive, 1,013 adults were interviewed about their hand washing habits. …Ninety-one percent of adults claimed in the poll that they washed their hands after using a public restroom…only 82 percent actually did so.

Women, the study found, were more diligent than men: 90 percent washed their hands, compared with only 75 percent of the men.”

With all sorts of diseases being spread hand to hand including,

  • Common and Swine Flu
  • Cold Virus
  • Skin Irritations
  • Parasites

it is imperative that we all wash our hands not only after the bathroom but several time throughout the day. What could be easier than simply turning on the water getting some suds from the soap dispenser and washing your hands?
